What I Take
by Jerry Emanuelson
I had removed my complete nutritional supplement program from this site because too many people wanted to just copy it for themselves, even though it was clearly not appropriate for everyone.  I've decided to put back online the core list of nutritional supplements that I consider to be especially important.  This is not a list of everything that I take, but just a core list that I believe others may find useful.  I earn a commission on sales of Life Extension Foundation supplements if you click on the LEF links on this web site.  I have also mentioned below some alternative products on which I don't earn any kind of a commission.  The prices of most Life Extension Foundation products are a bit high if you are not a member, but a good value if you are a member.  Membership in the Life Extension Foundation has many benefits.  In addition to discounts on their products and their blood testing, you get an excellent monthly magazine, which is easily the best health magazine on the market.
Mitochondrial Energy Optimizer, 120 capsules
Super Omega-3 EPA/DHA with Sesame Lignans & Olive Fruit Extract, 120 enteric coated softgels
Life Extension Mix Capsules, 490 capsules
Mitochondrial Energy Optimizer
This is one of the most important nutritional supplements for health and life extension.  It has multiple beneficial effects.  Unfortunately, FDA regulations prohibit me from stating here everything that it does since the FDA would consider that to be making a drug claim. All I can say it that this product contains carnosine, R-lipoic acid, acetyl-l-carnitine arginate and benfotiamine.  This is a particularly potent combination of ingredients.  This is the most expensive oral supplement that I take, but it has been worth it.
Omega-3 Capsule Softgels
The important thing is to use pharmaceutical grade fish oil.  I often use these Life Extension Foundation Omega-3 Fish Oil Capsules, but sometimes I prefer the capsules from
A-M B-Well.  The important thing is to get fish oil capsules certified for purity by the International Fish Oil Standards.  The Life Extension Foundation makes both plain and enteric-coated versions of its product.  The enteric coating is for people who have a fishy after-taste or "after-odor" after taking plain fish oil capsules.
Life Extension Mix.
The Life Extension Foundation makes several versions of this multi-nutrient formulation that can serve as a base for your program of nutritional supplementation.  In the past, I have also used Personal Radical Shield made by Life Enhancement Products or one of the Extend formulations made by Vitamin Research Products.  These companies also make formulations that only require taking two or three capsules a day for those who are not ready for nutritional supplementation that requires taking many capsules every day.
Vitamin D3, 5,000 IU 60 capsules
Mega Green Tea Extract (lightly caffeinated), 100 vegetarian capsules
OptiZinc, 30 mg 90 vegetarian capsules
Vitamin D3, 5,000 IU
Recent testing has indicated that 80 to 90 percent of the population is deficient in vitamin D.   This has caused severe and widespread adverse health consequences, but "official" recommended daily allowances for vitamin D remain at only about ten percent of adequate levels.   Even conventional physicians recognize this as a significant public health problem.
Green Tea Extract
Whenever I can, I try to drink about five cups of green tea per day.   Whenever it is inconvenient for me to drink enough green tea, I take one or two of these Green Tea Extract capsules during the day.
Some people can get enough zinc from other supplements.  For an additional zinc supplement, I prefer OptiZinc, which is a patented form of zinc monomethionine.  Extra zinc is especially important for those who are genetically predisposed to macular degeneration.  Those who supplement with very high levels of zinc must be careful to guard against copper deficiency.

Next are three hormones that are sometimes difficult to find.  Although melatonin is fairly common, it is often found in only the 3 mg. dosage.  Many people require a dosage of melatonin that is either much more or much less than the 3 mg. dosage.  One study found a 40 to 1 ratio among the optimal dosages of supplemental melatonin for different individuals.  The optimal dosage may be difficult to determine.  Most people will just have to experiment with various dosages.  The Life Extension Foundation sells melatonin in a very wide range of dosages.

In most cases, there are no reliable ways to predict who may benefit from supplemental pregnenolone or DHEA.  Blood tests are available for both pregnenolone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA).   DHEA is also available in several different capsule strengths from the Life Extension Foundation.

Melatonin, pregnenolone and DHEA are all natural hormones that drop in level, often dramatically, with increasing age.

Melatonin, 3 mg 60 capsules
Pregnenolone, 100 mg 100 capsules
DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone), 25 mg 100 capsules
DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone)
